List of Disney's Sleeping Beauty characters

The following are fictional characters in Disney's 1959 film Sleeping Beauty.

Contents

Princess Aurora

Princess Aurora is the title character of the film. After Maleficent curses when she was only a baby, Aurora is taken to the woods by Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather, where her name is changed to Briar Rose to conceal her identity from Maleficent. Aurora is an official Disney Princess.

Maleficent

Maleficent is the main antagonist of the film and the self-proclaimed "Mistress of All Evil". She curses the infant Aurora to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die before the sunset of her sixteenth birthday, just because she was not invited to the baby's christening. Maleficent has appeared in several media beyond Sleeping Beauty, including live-events, books and video games (playing a major role in the Kingdom Hearts series), leading the Disney Villains in most of these appearances.

Prince Phillip

First appearance Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Voiced by Bill Shirley (original film)
Roger Craig Smith (Disney Princess Enchanted Tales)
Josh Robert Thompson (Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep)

Prince Phillip is the hero of the film and Aurora's true love, voiced by Bill Shirley. Phillip is based on the prince from the original fairy tale that appears a hundred years after the princess is put to sleep by the curse of the wicked fairy godmother, having heard the story of the sleeping princess, and entered the castle. He trembled upon seeing the princess's beauty and fell on his knees before her. He kissed her, then she woke up, and then everyone lived happily ever after. Unlike the prince from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and Prince Charming from Cinderella, Phillip was the first prince in Disney theatrical animated features to be given a proper name and a full character.

At Aurora's birth, it was said that Philip would marry the princess, the daughter of his father's best friend. A young Phillip presents a gift to the infant Aurora at her christening, but ironically is less than impressed when he sees her. The event is interrupted by Maleficent, who appears and curses Aurora, causing the Three Good Fairies to take Aurora into the forest to raise her. However, much like the Snow Prince in Snow White, Phillip is riding in the forest and hears Aurora, now known as Briar Rose, singing. He follows her voice and starts singing with her. She tries to run away, but he follows her. By the end of the song, they have fallen in love. However, Aurora realises she is disobeying her "aunts" and leaves, but not before telling Phillip she will be celebrating her birthday at her cottage in the middle of the forest. After being captured by Maleficent and thrown into her dungeon after arriving at Briar Rose's home, the Three Good Fairies rescue him so that he in turn can save Aurora. Phillip leaves Maleficent's castle and is target of the wicked fairy's fury, who casts all sort of spells at him, including lightnings and a forest of thorns round King Stefan's castle. At the gates of the castle, Phillip faces a terrible battle with Maleficent herself, who has assumed dragon form. The battle ends with her being killed and him narrowly escaping with his life. He kisses Aurora and she wakes up. They then go downstairs, arm in arm, and share a dance after Aurora meets her parents.

In Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams, Phillip is one of the characters from Sleeping Beauty to make an appearance, now voiced by Roger Craig Smith. At the beginning of the "Keys to the Kingdom" segment, Phillip is set to leave the kingdom along with his father and Aurora's parents for two days for a Royal Conference, leaving Aurora to reign over it in their absence. Before departing, Phillip encourages Aurora to do a good job while in charge of the kingdom and tells her to look at the brightest star at night, as he will be doing the same. Phillip returns at the end of the segment and is part of the celebration for Aurora's duty.

Phillip also appears in Disney/Square's Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep in his homeworld, "Enchanted Dominion". Phillip plays a very similar role to that of the original film, meeting Aurora at the forest and singing along with her. Later, Phillip fights along with Aqua, an original character from the video game, in the battle against Maleficent's goons, and Maleficent in her dragon form. Phillip defeats Maleficent with his sword; however, unlike the film, Maleficent is not killed, but merely weakened to the point that she reverts to her first form. Phillip goes on to kiss Aurora and break Maleficent's spell on her. In the original Kingdom Hearts, Enchanted Dominion has been swallowed by the Heartless, and Phillip himself has disappeared, but is presumably restored after Sora defeats "Ansem" at the end of the game.

Phillip is one of the many Disney characters that appear in the TV series Disney's House of Mouse. He also appears in theme-parks and live events. Phillip is featured in the "Disney Heroes" franchise, a toyline similar but much less successful than the Disney Princess franchise. Phillip and Maleficent in dragon form appear in stylized versions, somehow different from their regular appearance.[1]

Flora, Fauna and Merryweather

Flora, Fauna and Merryweather

First appearance Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Voiced by Flora:
Verna Felton (Sleeping Beauty)
Tress MacNeille (House of Mouse)
Barbara Dirikson (Disney Princess Enchanted Tales)
Susan Blakeslee (Kingdom Hearts)
Fauna:
Barbara Jo Allen (Sleeping Beauty)
Russi Taylor (other appearances)
Merryweather:
Barbara Luddy (Sleeping Beauty)
Tress MacNeille (other appearances)

Flora, Fauna and Merryweather are the three good fairy godmothers of Aurora. They are based on the good fairies appearing in the original fairy tale and various retellings. However, their number and names vary from version to version, sometimes being seven (a total of eight, counting the wicked fairy) or twelve (a total of thirteen, with the wicked fairy). Like their fairy tale counterparts, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather appear at baby Aurora's christening to present their gifts to the new-born princess. Their wings are very small. For doing most of the work for both lovers, Aurora and Phillip, they are the main protagonists.

Aware of Maleficent's power, the fairies decide to protect Aurora with the king and queen's consent. They disguise themselves as peasant women and sneak Aurora away with them to a woodland cottage until her sixteen birthday lapses, passing themselves off as her aunts and swearing off magic to conceal themselves. On the day of Aurora's sixteenth birthday, the fairies attempt to make her a gown and a cake. When their attempts end in disaster they decide to use their wands, resulting in a magical fight between Flora and Merryweather over the color of the gown—Flora insisting that it be pink and Merryweather insisting that it be blue—that catches Maleficent's pet raven Diablo's attention. When Aurora returns home from the forest, the fairies reveal the truth of her birth to her and take her to her parents' castle. In the castle, Maleficent uses her magic to lure Aurora away from her boudoir and up to a tower, where a spinning wheel awaits her. Fascinated by the wheel with Maleficent's will enforcing it, Aurora touches the spindle, pricking her finger and completing the curse.

The fairies place Aurora on a bed and place all in the kingdom in a deep ageless sleep until the spell is broken. While falling asleep, King Hubert tries to tell Stefan of his son being in love with a peasant girl, which makes Flora realize that Prince Phillip is the man Aurora has fallen in love with, and they fly back to the cottage for him. However, Phillip is already captured by Maleficent's goons by that time, so the fairies sneak into Maleficent's stronghold and free the prince. Phillip and the fairies escape from the Forbidden Mountain whilst being attacked by Maleficent's minions, which the fairies succeed in blocking. When Diablo tries to warn Maleficent, Merryweather chases him and eventually turns him into a stone statue. The fairies then assist Phillip in his escape and battle against Maleficent, ultimately blessing Phillip's sword as he throws it directly into Maleficent's heart, causing Maleficent to fall to her death from a cliff. The fairies are present as Aurora meets her parents and as she dances with Phillip, who revives Flora and Merryweather's argument over Aurora's gown.

The three fairies appear in Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams during the "Keys to the Kingdom" segment. As King Stefan, Queen Leah, King Hubert and Prince Phillip leave the kingdom for a Royal Conference; Aurora is left in charge of the kingdom. The fairies offer to help her, but Aurora declines; however, Aurora later asks the fairies to deliver King Hubert his speech which he has forgotten at the castle. Merryweather still is worried about Aurora and, before leaving with Flora and Fauna, gives her wand to the princess in case she needs any assistance and warns her to be very careful with it. The fairies manage to deliver the speech in time, and are about to return when Merryweather reveals she had lent her wand to Aurora when she was not supposed to do so. The fairies appear at the end of the segment and take part of the welcome-back meal.

The three fairies also play a role in the Kingdom Hearts series of video games. They first appear in Kingdom Hearts II at Yen Sid's tower, giving Sora his new outfit after he wakes from his year-long sleep, as well as the Star Seeker Keyblade and the ability to use Drive, and later witnessing Maleficent's return to power. At first, they all argue over what colour Sora's new outfit should be, until agreeing to zap it all at the same time. The end result is a black outfit with colourful highlights all over. In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, the fairies appear in their homeworld, the "Enchanted Dominion", talking with Ventus about Aurora and Phillip and later assisting him in his battle against Maleficent. They also appear at the end of Aqua and Phillip's battle against Maleficent in her dragon form, again blessing Phillip's sword as he throws it into Maleficent's heart; however, the attack does not kill her and just defeats her. During the credits, while Aurora and Phillip are dancing, Flora and Merryweather continue their old argument over what colour Aurora's dress should be.

The fairies had appeared as guests in the TV series Disney's House of Mouse. They also appear at themed-parks and live events. They co-host the Magic, Music and Mayhem show with the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella. In the Disney Divas event at Disneyland, the fairies appeared at the climax of the show, comfronting Maleficent, the Evil Queen and Cruella de Vil, among others, and later introducing Cynthia Harriss, former president of Disneyland Resort.[2]

King Stefan

King Stefan
First appearance Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Voiced by Taylor Holmes (original film)
Corey Burton (Disney Princess Enchanted Tales)

King Stefan is Aurora's father, voiced by Taylor Holmes in his last role. The film begins with a description of his kingdom and his marriage, and how happy he and his wife, Queen Leah, were with the birth of their daughter. Stefan organizes a celebration to present Aurora to the kingdom, and invites his best friend, King Hubert, to have his daughter betrothed to Hubert's son, Prince Phillip. During the celebration, Maleficent makes her appearance without any invitation and curses Aurora to die before her sixteenth birthday by pricking her finger on the spindle of a spinning while, for not being invited. Stefan decrees all spinning wheels in the kingdom burned, but Flora, Fauna and Merryweather know that this is not enough to stop Maleficent, so they ask permission to Stefan and his wife to take Aurora with them and hide them until her sixteenth birthday. The narrator suggests that the following years were of sadness for Stefan and his kingdom due to Aurora's absence.

Stefan next appears as the sixteen years have passed, preparing everything for the return of his daughter, and discussing with Hubert the future of their kingdoms and their children. Stefan wishes for Aurora and Phillip to get to know each other before they get married, unlike Hubert who already has their children's new castle made and ready for them to move in after the celebration of Aurora's return. Stefan is next seen waiting with the whole kingdom for Aurora's arrival, unaware that she has already pricked her finger, until the fairies put everyone to sleep. Stefan later wakes up at the end of the film, just in time to meet his daughter and watching her dancing with Phillip.

In Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams, Stefan, now voiced by Corey Burton, departs with the queen, Hubert and Phillip to a Royal Conference, leaving Aurora in charge of the kingdom. He is next seen just as he is about to enter the castle, warned by a duke warns him to not enter the hall as it is filled with animals, a situation that is solved by Aurora just before Stefan enters the hall. He attends the celebration organized by Aurora at the end.

King Hubert

King Hubert
First appearance Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Voiced by Bill Thompson (original film)
Jeff Bennett (Disney Princess Enchanted Tales)

King Hubert is Phillip's father, voiced by Bill Thompson. Hubert and his best friend, King Stefan, had betrothed their children to marry each other when the time comes, so that their kingdoms remain forever united. He is invited to Aurora's christening and witnesses Maleficent cursing Aurora. Though the baby princess is taken away by Flora, Fauna and Merryweather, the betrothal remains the same. Hubert is next seen as sixteen years have passed and Stefan is preparing the celebration for Aurora's return. Hubert and Stefan are talking about their children and their kingdoms when the conversation almost results in a fight until both kings realize they are about to fight for no reason. The scene is interrupted by Phillip's arrival. The prince tells his father that he has met a young woman in the forest and that he will marry her, against his father's will. Unbeknownst to Hubert, this young woman is Aurora under the disguise of "Briar Rose", the fake identity the fairies have given her to protect her from Maleficent. Hubert is unsuccessful as he tries to change Phillip's mind about marrying a peasant instead of his fianceé, so he returns to the castle to talk with Stefan and give him the news. During this events, Maleficent's curse has been fulfilled and Aurora has fallen into a deep sleep, so the fairies decide to put everyone else asleep. Just as he is falling asleep, Hubert is telling an already sleeping Stefan that Phillip is in love with a peasant girl, which makes Flora realize that it was Phillip whom Aurora met in the forest. Hubert wakes up at the end of the film, resuming his conversation with Stefan and is about to tell him that Phillip loves a peasant girl when Aurora and Phillip are seen coming down the hall staircase, which leaves Hubert confused but satisfied.

Hubert is one of the characters from Sleeping Beauty that return in Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams, now voiced by Jeff Bennett. He attends a Royal Conference along with Phillip, Stefan and Queen Leah, in which Hubert is due to give a speech. However, Hubert realizes he has forgotten his speech at Stefan's castle only when he is already at the Royal Conference. Hubert tries to find it everywhere until the fairies arrive and deliver him his speech. Hubert is next seen at the end of the film, attending a meal organized by Aurora.

Queen Leah

Queen Leah
First appearance Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Voiced by

Verna Felton (Original film)

Barbara Dirikson (Disney Princess Enchanted Tales)

Queen Leah is the beautiful wife of King Stefan and the mother of Princess Aurora. She appears alongside her husband and newborn daughter as the entire kingdom gathers at the castle to celebrate Princess Aurora's birth. The witch Maleficent then appears, and in retaliation for not having been invited to the celebration, Maleficent curses the baby Princess to die before the sunset of her sixteenth birthday. The three Good Fairies (Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather) are allowed by Queen Leah and King Stefan to take Aurora into hiding and raise her until the time of the curse has passed. The Queen is next seen as she is waiting for Aurora's return, but Aurora is placed under the curse before she can be returned to her parents. Therefore, the three Good Fairies put the entire kingdom (including the King and Queen) under a sleeping spell until Aurora's curse is lifted. The Queen reappears at the end of the film, just in time to meet Aurora. Queen Leah only has 2 lines in the whole film and her name is never given or spoken. Verna Felton voices her briefly during the film.

The Queen also appears in Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams, voiced by Barbara Dirikson. She attends a Royal Conference with Stefan, Hubert and Phillip, leaving Aurora in charge of the kingdom. She returns at the end of the segment to a celebration organized by her daughter.

Diablo

Diablo is Maleficent's pet raven and the secondary antagonist of the film. Diablo is present at Aurora's christening, during which Maleficent curses the baby. When Maleficent's goons inform her mistress that they have spent sixteen years looking for a baby, she sends Diablo to look for Aurora. Diablo flies over the forest looking for any sign of the princess until he discovers the cottage where she is living with the fairies due to some magic caused by Flora and Merryweather. After informing his mistress, Diablo joins Maleficent as she and the goons capture Phillip in the cottage, and notices the fairies' presence in the Forbidden Mountain while Maleficent is unaware of it. Diablo later discovers that Phillip has escaped with the fairies' aid, and commands the goons to stop them from leaving the mountain. Merryweather returns and chases Diablo round Maleficent's tower until she turns him into a statue. He was voiced by Dal McKennon in the original film and he is currently voiced by Frank Welker.

Diablo plays a small but vital role in Kingdom Hearts II, as he is the one who carries Maleficent's cloak into Yen Sid's tower and is partly responsible for his mistress' return to power.

Samson

Samson is Prince Phillip's pet horse. He appears in the two films. He is very fond of Aurora, but can become jealous when Phillip shows affection towards her. He is voiced by Frank Welker in Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams.
